Com Bank launches scholarship scheme
100 scholarships worth Rs 2.5 million annually

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon, one of the country’s foremost socially responsible corporate entities, presented undergraduates from around the country with scholarships of Rs 2500 per month under a new corporate social responsibility project launched recently.
This is the first higher education project undertaken by the Commercial Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility Trust at which 100 undergraduates received cash scholarships at the presentation ceremony held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake.
These students will receive scholarship money for the ten academic months of every year that they study at University. Under this scheme the Bank will pay out Rs 2.5 million annually.
The undergraduates who would benefit were chosen with the assistance of the University Grants Commission and followed the criteria used in the Mahapola Scholarship Scheme. Among the criteria used to identify deserving students was the number of attempts made at the A/L examination, the number of school-going children in the family, parental income and the distance between the university and the student’s home.
The Commercial Bank CSR Trust concentrates on projects focused on education, child welfare, rehabilitation of irrigation systems and community service. The Trust was commenced with a startup capital of Rs 25 million and the Bank contributes up to one per cent of post tax profits every year to the trust for its smooth functioning.
The Commercial Bank also has a rewards scheme for deserving younger students. All holders of Arunalu minors accounts who excel at the year 5 scholarship examination every year are given valuable cash prizes. Since its inception nearly 400 cash awards totaling Rs 2.8 million have been presented to such students.


Microsoft Awards Imagine Cup 2006

With the jubilant team from the Faculty of Information Technology, University of Moratuwa walking away with a rare opportunity to Colombo, May 2006 - The ingenuity and creativity of Sri Lanka’s next generation of IT experts came to the fore at Microsoft Imagine Cup 2006 showcase their skills in the international arena.
A year of intense competition that spanned across universities in Sri Lanka and fused technological expertise with artistic spirit came to an end today when the five finalists presented their projects for live judging during the final and awards ceremony, held at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.
Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne (Country Manager, Microsoft Sri Lanka) crowned Yasith Perera, Shanaka Perera, Prasad Sampath Wickramasinghe and M.A. Chathurika Sandarenu (all from the Faculty of Information Technology, University of Moratuwa), the national winners of the second annual Imagine Cup student technology competition.
The winning team ‘Arunalu’ impressed the judges with a project titled ‘Panchayudha’, which is designed to organize the clinic-related activities of expectant women and mothers with infants.
This application promises to introduce a mechanism for keeping information such as vaccination schedules, prescriptions, treatment and clinic records visible to all the relevant people.

CDAX marks 3 years with impressive growth

CDAX, Sri Lanka’s pioneer online trading system of the Colombo Stock Exchange celebrates its third year recording a hefty 12 billion turnover online. On 9 June 2003, CDAX executed the first direct access online trade order on the CSE, and today, it has to its credit the largest online trading community of over 4,000 users worldwide and account for 30% of the daily trades on the CSE.

CIE gets new regional manager

University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) has appointed William Bickerdike as regional manager for South Asia, covering India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and is based in New Delhi. Earlier he has work in Pakistan, North Africa and Middle East region.
