Peterite College Hall marks 75 years

The Nicholas Perera Hall at St. Peters College, Colombo marks its 75th anniversary this year.
In celebration of this Great Hall the Old Boys Union plans to have a series of events kicking off proceedings with a Sing Along on Saturday, December 9 in the College Hall. Plans are also underway to chronicle the history and events of this great hall.
This hall was the most sought after by both foreign and local artistes especially for its wonderful acoustics and convenient location.
The Vienna Boys choir during one of their tours in the early fifties performed at St. Peters. In the late forties the then leading tenor in the world Luigi Infantino sang at St. Peters. A galaxy of other greats to recall a few were The Blue Diamonds from the Philippines who took Europe by storm in the late fifties and early sixties, Bill Forbes of “Atcha England” Fame, Desmond Kelly with his “Dream World”, Cliff Foenander with “Remember Me”.
Among the leading locals were the Jetliners and Spitfires who performed here. It would be interesting to note that in the late fifties the Jetliners performance in this hall was also televised on close circuit television in the college premises sponsored by Maurice Roche. This was during the Fun-O-Rame exhibition spearheaded by the then Rector Father Arthur N. Fernando.


Biodiversity Week

The exhibition of ‘Fish and Men – Research in the developing countries”, organised by the Alliance Française de Kandy will be opened by Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Prof. Buddhi Marambe, on November 24 at 6.30 pm marking its one week program (November 24 – December 1) on Biodiversity.
The exhibition highlights the main aspects of the research in developing countries concerning fishing situation and the preservation of marine resources.


 Isipathana English Day

The Annual English Day of the Primary English Unit of Isipathana College was held on November 7 at the College Main Hall. The Chief Guest on the occation was Lecturer in English Language Teaching Unit, University of Colombo, Lasitha Somananda. Guest of Honour, Managing Director, LAN Management Development Service, Institute for Computer Training & Software Development, Mervyn Gunasekara lighted the traditional oil lamp at the occasion. The Principal Upper School, Dr. Punyadasa Kuruppu and the Juniour School principal are also present.


Southlands College AGM

The Annual General Meeting and get-together 2006 of Southlands College, Galle, Old Parents Association, Colombo Branch will be held on Sunday November 26 at the Otter Aquatic Club, 380/1, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 at 10.00am.


Course on SL waterfalls

Lanka Council on Waterfalls (LCWF) will be conducting a three month course in the scientific study of Waterfalls & Natural Resources Management. Beginning from 2007 January, the course contents provides modern methods complemented by Multimedia and Audio Visual facilities, reinforced with exposure to international environmental educational curriculum.


Public Talks by J. Krishnamurti

‘Freedom and Authority: Choiceless Awareness’, a documentary video film based on talks of J. Krishnamurti organized by the Krishnamurti Centre of Sri Lanka Inc. will be held on November 19 at the TV Auditorium, Public Library, Colombo 7 at 10.30 am.


Anula Vidyalaya J’pura Commerce Day

Commerce exhibition on October 31 at Anula Vidyalaya which was organised in collaboration with the 2006 Commerce Day.



 ‘Paramparaven’, an exhibition of exquisite hand-craft artistry by tsunami-affected women entrepreneurs of Mirissa will be held on Saturday, November 2006 from 9am – 2pm at the Galle Face Hotel.


Pre-schools for Hambantota

MP for Hambantota district and Chairman, Janasuwaya Development Foundation, Sajith Premadasa, has embarked on a wide ranging project to uplift and enhance the livelihoods and infrastructure in Hambantota district. The construction of pre-schools in the villages of Hambantota district is one such priority project. The opening of a pre-school built at a cost of Rs. 1.2 million in the Nedigamwila village of the Tissa division of Hambantota district by Sajith Premadasa.


Talent contest

‘The Stage 2006’ a talent contest for the Leos of District 306 B1 & 306 B2 organised by the Leo Club of Mattumagala will be held on Thursday November 23 at the Tower Hall, Colombo 10 at 6.00pm. The guest performance will be made by ‘Three in one with black’ the superstars, Malith, Shihan and Amila. The event is a fundraiser to distribute new clothes, stationery and Christmas gifts for 1000 needy children from Paliyagoda to Negembo. Tickets Rs 1000, 500, 300 are available at Pizza Hut branches, Anusha Mehma Fashions, Kiribathgoda, Colombo and Wattala.


Seminar on ‘Green Card’ Lottery Programme

The U.S. Embassy invites the public to a seminar on the Diversity Visa Lottery program, commonly referred to as the “Green Card Lottery.” The seminar will be held on November 21 at 6:00 p.m. at New Town Hall in Colombo. U.S. Consular officials will explain the requirements, explain how to spot impostor services and give step-by-step instructions on how to apply for the program online. Translation into both Sinhala and Tamil will be provided. Adults and students, who have completed their O-levels or higher, are welcome to attend.


 Thai Festival

Sri Lanka had the honour of being invited by the Municipal Council of Lampang City Thailand for this year’s ‘Loy Krathong’ festival that was held from November 4 - 6. The other countries invited were Laos and China.
The 18 Members from the Tilak Fernando dance troupe under the direction of Veteran dancer Sunila Jayanthi participated at this festival. The photo shows some of the Sri Lankan dancers in traditional costume performing.



The Tower Hall Theatre Foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of ‘Maname’ by Professor Ediriweera Sarachchandra, whilst appreciating the works of the dramatist, Bandula Jayawardane on November 20 at 3.00 p.m. at Sausiripaya Auditorium.
It will be presided over by the Prime Minister, Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, Minister Cultural and National Heritage, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane, Mrs. Lalitha Sarachchandra, Mrs. Bandula Jayawardane, Lionel Fernando and a host of artists will participate. The keynote address will be made by Prof. K. N. O. Dharmadasa.


Sale of Work

Colombo Centre for Special Education at 80/7 Layards Road, Colombo 5, an Institution dedicated towards the care and development of individuals with various disabilities has organized a Sale of Work which will be held on Saturday, November 25 at 9.15 a.m. - 2p.m. The chief guest on this occasion will be Chairman, Hatton National Bank, Reinzie Wijetilleke. The Colombo Centre is taking this opportunity to display the range of talents present at the Centre as well as create some awareness and respect for individuals with, similar needs, in our society.
