The Norwegians have been told by the government to devise a
system to break the present deadlock between the government and
the LTTE using their expertise and experience in peace

They had been told not to limit their role to a post box but to
formulate a system to thaw the ice. The Norwegians had also
discussed the Allan Rock report with the government, where it
was alleged that the Karuna group was working hand in glove with
the government. The example cited by the Norwegian facilitators
was that there were two STF bunkers situated alongside Karuna
camps in the East.President declares

Is
our foreign policy in safe hands?
The question needs to be asked in the context of
concerns that have been voiced against Sri Lankan
interests in various fora with little or no reaction
from Colombo, at least officially.
There was a German minister announcing that it was
freezing financial aid for post-Tsunami
reconstruction. It was the reasoning behind the move
that was astounding. This was done to prompt the
Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to come to the negotiating table,
Overseas Development Minister Heidemarie
Wieczorek-Zeul announced and urged other European
countries to do the same.
Tug-of-war for Foreign
Ministry Secretary post
Controversy is brewing regarding one of the key
positions in the Sri Lankan administrative setup.
The coveted position of Secretary to the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs is vacant since the retirement of
Siri Palihakkara recently. The matter which would
have been yet another procedural appointment to a
head of a ministry, has now developed in to a major
talking point, with the President and the Foreign
Minister differing in their opinion as to the most
suitable candidate for the job.
Finding the right head
to manage the foreign frontier
The task of a consummate diplomat is to balance the
fiery passion for his country with a quiet
professional cool. H. M. G. S. Palihakkara combined
both qualities in serving his country abroad and at
home. When at the peak of his career he was
appointed as head of the Foreign Ministry he brought
in exceptional skills of handling complex issues,
international relations and inter-personal
sensitivities – all which he had guided with the
soft and sure touch of a seasoned and unflappable
diplomat. |

Despite the rising cost of living, the economic hardships and
the threat to security the country is presently undergoing, the
majority of people believe that Sri Lanka can emulate their feat
of 11 years ago.
Fitness trainer warns Sri Lanka’s
