Govt. under flak at Asia Society forum
By Mendaka Abeysekera in
Rohini Hensman, the Asian Society scholar from Sri Lanka
severely criticised the Sri Lanka Government’s role in the
current ethnic conflict at a panel discussion organised by the
Asia Society, New York.
This panel discussion was held at Rose Conference Hall at Asia
Society, 725 Park avenue on March 26 and the topic was “South
Asian Outlook 2007: Peace, Prosperity and Pluralism”.
She blamed the Sri Lankan Government for being complicit with
child soldier recruitment by the Karuna group and intensifying
the “war against Tamil people.” Hensman pointed out that there
is credible evidence that the Sri Lanka Government was behind
the child soldier recruitment of Karuna group.
The Asian Society scholar also stated that a major moderate
force among the Sri Lankan Tamils is now emerging and the Sri
Lankan Government should deal with them in the future.
The Sri Lanka mission to the UN, the New York Society of United
Sri Lankans, The Consortium of Sri Lankan Expatriates and a
number of other Sri Lanka interest groups in New York made
representation at this discussion from the audience.
