Lanka to appeal to Saudi Arabia

By Chamindra Wickremasinghe
Sri Lanka is to appeal a recent death sentence given by the Saudi Arabian High Court on Rizana Nazik who allegedly strangled to death the four- month- old infant of her employer.
Nazik reportedly from Kalmunai, Ampara was just 17 years- old in February 2005 when she allegedly committed the crime. The teenager is reported to have stealthily adjusted her age on her passport so that she could enter Saudi Arabia to work.
Chairman, Foreign Employment Bureau, Kingsley Ranawaka told The Nation, “The Employment Bureau is paying the Sri Lankan embassy in Saudi for retaining the lawyers to take the necessary legal action against the ruling. We have time to lodge an appeal.”
Ranawaka also said that due to passports being modified with fake details by some migrant workers it is difficult to trace them when it comes to a situation like this.
