Rs. 150 billion scam at Nation Building Ministry

By Rasika Jayakodi
The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has received reports of 40 state institutions with discrepancies amounting to a whopping Rs. 150 billion.
The sum misappropriated is said to be one third of the national income.
National Development Bank, National Lotteries Board, Lankaputhra Bank, Mihin Lanka, Samurdhi Authority, RADA and several other institutes under the Nation Building Ministry are involved in the irregularities.
It was reported that most of the institutions conveyed to COPE were under the Finance Ministry. According to internal sources, after the Budget, 30 state institutions are to be summoned by the COPE.
Information on the misappropriation of Rs. 150 billion will be included in the latest COPE report, which will be presented to Parliament next year.
