JHU lashes out at HRW, dismisses human rights report

By Jayashika Padmasiri
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday lashed out at the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) and dismissed the 241-page report recently issued by the rights group, which held the government responsible for the gross violation of human rights and abuses in Sri Lanka.

JHU Spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasingha told The Nation that the HRW should initially issue reports about the human rights situation in their own country before making statements about other nations such as Sri Lanka.

“We completely dismiss the report issued by the HRW. They should issue reports about the USA first, instead of making statements about Sri Lanka. They should talk about Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq and their own country if they are really concerned about the violation of human rights,” Warnasinghe said.

“They have made a business out of human rights today. Different organisations can issue different reports but we will not take those reports seriously because we know that they are being issued with the intention of demoralising the Sri Lankan troops who are fighting against terrorism. These organisations are finding ways to discourage Sri Lanka from eradicating terrorism,” he said.
