“I’ve always been shy” - Geetha

By Sarashi Samarasinghe
She chose her path to become an actress by joining the Mutuhara Children’s Society. After that initial training, she entered the theatre and film industry hoping to travel a long way in that field. She is Geetha Ranasinghe.
“I never thought of becoming an actress,” said Ranasinghe.

According to her, she had always been very shy as a child and had never taken part even in dance items or concerts while at school.

“I studied at Sri Rahula Maha Vidyalaya, Angoda and I was very keen on sports at that time,” said Ranasinghe.
However, she said that she always liked to study dancing, but was not much interested in continuing her higher studies.
“I was always sick as a kid so that I could not concentrate on my studies well,” she explained.

“I found myself interested in the field of art when I ultimately joined the Angoda Madinawatta, Mutuhara Children’s Society. That was through one of my friends after I left school,” she added.

After joining Mutuhara Children’s Society, Ranasinghe has taken part in several aesthetic events.
“I first took part in the stage drama Ditta Mangalika and later took part in many concerts in the capacities of singing and dancing,” she stated.

Ranasinghe has nine members in her family, and her father had passed away 10 years ago.
“I have four elder brothers and two younger sisters,” she said.

According to Ranasinghe, her father had always been a very calm, reserved person while her mother is a little tough with the children.

“My parents did not wish me to enter this field though they gave me permission to continue because it is what I wanted to do,” Ranasinghe said.

She had been working at an advertising company when she was invited to host the programme Handa Rendi Gee under the direction of Sirithunga Perera.

“Later on I was introduced to teledrama director Anuruddha Jayasinghe by Francis Diyalagoda for the teledrama Vanawadule Wasanthaya,” she said

Geetha has acted in so many teledramas including Sathsara Rangana, Andara Veta, Ruwan Sakmana, Hada Puda Suna, Athugala Aadare. She has also performed in movies such as Sundara Varade, Mihidum Wasanthe, Yali Pipunemu, Nisala Gira and First Love Pooja.

“My hobbies are listening to music and watching movies,” Ranasinghe said.
According to Ranasinghe several productions are coming up in the near future.
“What I have to say for those who are hoping to enter this field is to believe in what you are doing and try to make an effort in what you are performing with dedication,” she stressed.

She further said that humility and honesty are the two qualities that artistes should always cherish in their lives.
“I am acting in a few new creations but at the moment I cannot give more details about them,” said Ranasinghe.
She expressed her gratitude towards Manel Wanaguru and Ananda Wickramage for giving her the fullest support in the field of acting.

“They have helped me in so many ways in this field and I express my sincere gratitude to all prominent figures in this field,” she said.
