Lack of staff hinders bribery battle

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) is facing a fresh crisis – the lack of sufficient staff to carry out investigations into some 2,000 odd cases which are still at preliminary level.

According to a highly-placed source, the Commission has around 2,000 cases which are yet to be inquired into. “The commission is still investigating 2,000 cases but it is difficult to conduct investigations since they need more manpower to conduct and conclude the investigations,” he said.

He further stated that even in the event more staff members were to be employed, the space issue at the office located in Colombo 7 would need to be addressed. “The main problem we have is accommodation. We cannot employ new staff since we do not have enough space at the Commission premises. We have informed the government about it and we are still waiting for their response,” he added. (AE)
