Heavy casualties hit LTTE, military

By Ayesha Wijeratne
The military yesterday claimed that the LTTE had lost 256 LTTE cadres within the last week alone during several operations in the Northern Province, raising the total number of cadre deaths to 3,173 for this year alone.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told The Nation that apart from the dead, more than 414 LTTE cadres were injured last week during fierce fighting in Muhamalai, Kilaly and Madhu areas.

The security forces have also suffered during the operations, with some 85 troops dead and some 212 injured last week.
A total of 144 soldiers who were injured following the attacks were admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo and Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

“Nearly 3,173 LTTE cadres, out of the estimated number of the total 5,000 LTTEers, have been killed by the security forces to date,” Nanayakkara added.
