Renowned creative directors to speak
at Cannes Lion Exhibition Forum

Chandini Rajaratnam, David Blacker, and Russel Miranda – some of the most recognised Creative Directors in Sri Lanka’s advertising fraternity – will come together on Friday, May 9, 2008 at a forum that is the highlight of an exhibition showcasing the winners of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival 2007. This exhibition is Sri Lanka’s first ever official screening of the Cannes Lions winners, and will be held from May 6 – 10, 2008 at the Harold Pieris Gallery (Lionel Wendt), Colombo 07.

The exhibition and forum is organised by the Metal Factor – Sri Lanka’s representative organisation for the Cannes Lion International – in conjunction with the Sri Lankan Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA), and aims to provide an insight into the winning work as well as the future of the local advertising industry based on the extensive knowledge and experiences of some leading figures in the industry.

While the exhibition will be open to the public, with no restrictions on tickets, entrance to the Creative Directors forum will be limited. Only 100 tickets, priced at Rs.500, are available for the evening.

Chandini Rajaratnam, fondly known as ‘C,’ is a multifaceted and a reputed figure in the industry with an advertising career that spans almost two decades. Currently the Vice President and Executive Creative Director at JWT, C initially started as a Programmer, moving on to Systems Analysis and Consultancy work before finding her creative niche in the advertising field. She is widely known in the advertising field to strike that rare balance between distinctive creative and honed strategy. Being the recipient of many local and regional awards, C’s work was featured in the Asia Gold Book 2005. Her immense talents and experience in the industry has also made her an ideal candidate to appear as guest lecturer at various institutions and women’s forums. Apart from her elite recognition as a guru on the discipline of advertising, she has also served on the panel of judges at SLIM Advertising Awards, Reggie Candappa Creative Awards and MAS Women Go Beyond Awards as well as serving on the jury at the first ever Male Icon Awards.

Joining C at the forum is David Blacker, who is no stranger to the advertising world. Having served an illustrious 15 year career as an Illustrator, Creative Director, Art Director, and Head of Art, Blacker has spent the bulk of his time at many of the highly reputed agencies in the industry including JWT, McCann Erickson and Lowe LDB. Currently working at Phoenix O&M, Blacker was a recipient of a ‘Print Campaign of the Year’ award for his very first SLIM entry. Blacker has won many awards in recognition of his creative talents and apart from being an award-winning novelist, he also moonlights as an illustrator and online military/political commentator.

Also appearing is renowned Executive Creative Director Russel Miranda from Grant McCann-Erickson. Miranda graduated from the JJ School of Art in India with a Bachelors degree. He chose advertising as his career and has now over 15 years of experience ranging through many brands and clients such as SriLankan Airlines, Singer, Nescafe and Elephant House. He has also worked at McCann-Erickson, Madrid on brands such as Master Card, LosCaseros, Coca –Cola, and Yellow Pages, and at McCann-Erickson, New York on Gillette and Zelnorm (Pharma) and at WCRS on Wolf Ollins, Dutton Merrifeld. Russell’s talent is clearly visible considering the numerous times the ‘Poppy Day’ campaign and SriLankan Airlines have outshone the competition at local awards shows, which includes Campaign of the Year. Russell was one of the ten worldwide recipients of the McCann HFD Kummel Scholarship, and he subsequently spent 4 months at McCann Erickson in Spain.

A change in politics and CoL needed - Rediffusion DYR project reveals

Rediffusion DYR, in their pursuit of embracing change initiated a project to gauge the mind set of the general public with the objective of eliciting key insights that would help them better understand the young, metropolitan Sri Lankan psyche. This project titled ‘What do you want to change today?’ is an attempt to gather people’s opinion on the ‘Change’ required for themselves and the entire nation at large.

This key initiative is part of a number of initiatives the agency will be undertaking as part of its efforts to combine global best practice with local market insight.

The activity was carried out at high footfall areas e.g. Majestic City, which had huge white boards placed outside the entrance areas of the malls carrying the message ‘What do you want to Change?’ A team of Rediffusion DYR carrying permanent marker pens invited members of the general public within the target group to write what they thought should ‘Change’ on the boards.

The response was immense with many individuals voicing their ideas for ‘Change.’ Overall approximately 700 people shared their opinions over the two days that this exercise was carried out. The agency is in the process of analysing the feedback with the intent of highlighting the current mindset, that in turn will prove invaluable in developing communication solutions that strike deep bonds with consumers. Initial themes that have emerged are the current political situation and concerns over the rising costs of living.

This project is ongoing and will be conducted on a quarterly basis covering high footfall areas, institutes, universities etc and aiming to cover different demographic segments. Over time this project will also help the agency measure changes in attitudes, response to political and socio-economic change as well as emerging trends. Rupavahini to showcase Coca-Cola Cricket Pathway activities

Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation has joined hands with Coca-Cola as the official and exclusive electronic media partner to support and showcase the recently launched Coca-Cola Cricket Pathway Programme.

Coca-Cola Cricket Pathway Programme was launched with the objective of discovering the hidden cricketing talent, among the 15-17 year old youngsters in rural and regional areas of Sri Lanka. In addition, the programme is also designed to equip the cricketing talent with unfeigned knowledge and expertise of the game. The programme was launched in February this year and the first coaching camp was held in Dambulla recently, under the close supervision of Aravinda De Silva and a group of expert coaches from Sri Lanka Cricket.

Manish Chaturvedi, The Country Manager – Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Coca-Cola Far East Ltd. said, “With cricket being played with so much passion in Sri Lanka, it is important to continuously discover and showcase cricketing talent.
