Confusion is abound as to why Walter Jayawardene, Minister-Counsellor
at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London, who continues to
write for an online news website, Asian Tribune, is allowed off
scot-free despite his actions going against normal ethical
The situation has led to a high degree of dissension amongst
Foreign Ministry officials and even High Commission staff, who
blame the Ministry hierarchy for failing to take action against

Palitha Kohona had initially attempted to take action against
Jayawardene and his articles, he was stopped by more powerful
Meanwhile, although a circular sent by Kohona forbids any staff
members of Embassies and High Commissions from writing articles
to media on any sensitive issues, Jayawardene has been a regular
contributor to the Asian Tribune news site.
While the same circular has advised the mission heads to warn
their staff not to contribute to the media without obtaining
prior approval, it is learnt that Jayawardene has never sought
approval to continue his contributions to the news site.
However, when High Commissioner Kshenuka Senewiratne attempted
to take action against Jayawardene when he wrote to the Asian
Tribune, Foreign Secretary Kohona had mediated in the matter,
saying that the High Commissioner had “misinterpreted” his
