JHU calls for action against Mannar Bishop

By Jayashika Padmasiri
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday called on the Catholic Convention to take action against Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph for allegedly making pro-LTTE statements.

JHU Spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasingha told The Nation that Archbishop Oswald Gomis was responsible for the prevailing state of affairs today as he had failed to take any action against the Mannar Bishop, who he said had once even requested a separate Catholic Convention for the Eelam.

“Does he not belong to the Catholic Convention? Why isn’t the Church taking any action against him? Recently the Church also made another appeal to the government, demanding that the Madhu area be declared a no man’s land. If they made this appeal before the security forces liberated Madhu, then it is justifiable. However, they are making it now, after the forces liberated it, so this is unacceptable,” he said.

Warnasingha further said that the party would protest against the government if they intended to listen to the appeal made by the Catholic Convention and decide to declare Madhu a no man’s land.

He also expressed the party’s displeasure over the Convention’s failure to respond to a letter sent to them by the JHU on the Madhu statue.
