JVP dissidents to register new party on May 10

The new party formed by the dissident JVP MPs will meet the Elections Commissioner after May 10 to register their new political movement, dissident MP Jayantha Samaraweera said.

“We will meet Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake after May 10,” he said, adding that they were now working on the constitution and the basic structure necessary to create a new political movement.

“We are now laying the background necessary to create a political movement like the constitution,” he said. He added that the new party would be an alliance of the patriotic forces in the country.

“Already people like Nandana Gunatilleke and Kamal Deshapriya have joined us and in the near future many JVP members who left the party and other patriotic and progressive elements will be joining us,” he said.

The party is open to all patriotic and progressive elements in society and the party constitution will be devised to empower members from the grassroots, Samaraweera revealed.

“Unlike the JVP, we will follow very democratic methods. Officials will be elected through elections, even at the grassroots level,” he added.

Meanwhile, reliable sources have revealed that the new political movement is being financed by S.L. Gunesekara and several top members of the Patriotic National Movement (PNM.) “The new party is financed by several individuals including S.L. Gunesekara,” a reliable source added. (RK)
