Govt. to initiate fresh peace moves soon

The government is likely to initiate fresh peace moves soon after the Provincial Council elections in the east, scheduled for May 10.
It is learnt that the government will give the green light to the Norwegian facilitators to commence peace moves between Wanni and Colombo once the election for the Eastern Provincial Council concludes.

According to government sources, Norwegian Special Envoy Jon Hansen Bauer is to visit Sri Lanka shortly to work out the necessary modalities between the government and the LTTE.

The government’s decision for fresh peace initiatives came following a decision by a political party supporting the LTTE to move a resolution in the Tamil Nadu state assembly against the government and armed forces of Sri Lanka.

This had prompted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to come out with a scathing attack on the LTTE.
He pointed out that the struggle orchestrated by the LTTE against the Sri Lankan Government was not necessarily a struggle by the Tamil people of Sri Lanka against the government.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government had exerted pressure on the centre to influence the Government of Sri Lanka to find a peaceful solution for the ethnic crisis
