  Indian appointment

Ministers lock horns

Two senior government ministers have clashed over an appointment made by one of them to meet Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Advisor N.K. Narayanan, apparently on government business. The minister in question, who had crossed over to the government from the UNP and who maintains a close rapport with the United States, had apparently sought an appointment with the Indian authorities through the High Commission in Colombo.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, who had learnt about the move, had hurriedly telephoned the Mission in Colombo and protested on the grounds that he was the Foreign Minister and any move to meet the Indian Foreign Minister should go through the proper channels.
Following Bogollagama’s intervention, the Indian Mission in Sri Lanka had cancelled the appointment for the meeting in question.
