A Bedtime Story

A drama directed by Jake Oorloff, entitled A Bedtime Story, which deals with the issue of child sex workers in Sri Lanka, will be staged at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre on June, 26 and 27. The cast includes Mario Fernando, Ruhanie Perera, Ashini Fernando and Ruvin de Silva.The drama is organised by the Interact Club of Royal College under the project Fun-Duh-Mental. Proceeds will be donated to the Nisaladiya Sevana Foundation, a rehabilitation centre for child sex workers

A short film screening/discussion and lecture on short films

“Labour Pain,” a screening of four short films by young filmmakers will be held at the auditorium of the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR) Media Unit, Maradana, at 3 p.m. on June 28. The lectures will be conducted by Dr. Tissa Abeysekara, Rev. Fr. Ernest Poruthota and Rev. Fr. Tissa Balasuriya. The films of the four amateurs are;
1. Me – (2006) – Indika Wickramaarachchi (12 minutes)
2. Homecoming – (2008) – Indrajith Mahawaduge (15 minutes)
3. She is Also Pregnant – (2007) – Thilina Alahakoon (20 minutes)
4. The Congigate – (2008) – Mohammed Ilhama Hosan (18 minutes)

Finlays undertakes renovation of female ward no.5 at Ragama Rehabilitation Hospital

As part of their CSR plan and connected activities related to skill development and empowerment of women, Finlays recently renovated and also supplied medical equipment to Ward No. 5 of Ragama Rehabilitation Hospital, for women. Finlays Chairman, Mr. Kumar Jayasuriya is seen handingover the sponsorship to the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Wijesuriya. A few inmates and staff members are also present at the handingover ceremony.

Requesting aid for flood victims 

Youth Collective for Social Service seeks aid for thousands of flood victims
 YCSS appeals for relief for thousands of people who were forced from their homes because of flash floods in the south and west of the country.

 At least 24 people have been killed in the floods triggered by torrential rains and over a quarter of a million people have been affected, many sheltered in schools and temples.

 Thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes, and initial estimates put the cost of reconstruction and rehabilitation to be in millions. Thousands of school children have lost their books and study materials and are in need of urgent assistance.

 The YCSS will collect exercise books and other general stationery items for school children affected from the flood. Additionally, appropriate library books are also needed to refill the school libraries.

 In the first phase of the project, YCSS plans to distribute 1000 books and stationery sets to schoolchildren from an affected area in the Kalutara District, which has been the most affected.

Strengthening Women – “Lakmava Diyaniyo”

The second national level workshop organised by “Lakmava Diyaniyo” with the intention of strengthening and enhancing the awareness of Sri Lankan women, socially, culturally and politically will be held today from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm at the auditorium of the Divisional Secretariat Office, Padukka.

Presentations and demonstrations by renowned food technologist/chef Dr. Publis Silva and renowned beauty culturist, Mr. Harris Wijesinghe, will be a feature of the workshop. Indigenous food preparations and locally manufactured products will also be displayed.

Entrance to the workshop is free of charge and sponsored by “Nature’s Secrets” producers. Participants could receive beauty treatments during the day. A bridal show will be an added attraction.

RASSL Monthly Lecture Series

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 23, at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka presents the ‘PRIX JEUNESSE Suitcase 2008’ the best productions from a bi-annual festival of children and youth television programmes. This festival is being held in Munich, Germany, at the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. Broadcast stations from all continents are entering their best productions into the competition. The awarded prizes are called Prix Jeunesse. Special prizes are being sponsored by UNICEF and UNESCO. Each festival has a specific motto; theme-based information units are being offered during the festival week.
The ‘PRIX JEUNESSE Suitcase,’ a compilation of the best programmes of the festival, is a hands-on training tool for producers, educators, researchers, parents and children’s audiences.

D. S. Swanasara 2008, a classic music concert organized by the Old boys Association (OBA) and year one Parents 2008 of D. S. Senanayake College Colombo will be held on June 24th at 7.00 pm at the B.M.I.C.H. Sunil Edirisinghe, T. M. Jayarathne and Ishak Beg with SLBC Orchestra will perform at this event.
