UNP leadership crisis worsens

In a bizarre development to the United National Party (UNP) leadership crisis, a questionnaire has been circulated amongst several party Parliamentarians seeking their thoughts on vital issues including whether Rukman Senanayake should be appointed leader of the party.

The paper consisting eight questions was given to over 15 party members last week.
It also asked for the members’ views on appointing MP Rukman Senanayake as the deputy leader of the UNP and appointing three assistant leaders, including Sajith Premadasa and S.B. Dissanayake.
The questionnaire, which was printed on a single A4 sheet, also sought the views on the appointment of 25 members to the UNP’s Executive Committee by the current leadership.

It also asked for members’ opinion on reactivating the D.S. Senanayake party constitution and the presenting of all financial accounts to the Executive Committee.
The other questions included the matter of seeking the Political Committee’s consent when making party decisions and appointing seat organisers. (For more on the questionnaire read the political column on page 5)
