Kandy Alliance Photo 2008

Rhythm of colour and light

Kandy Alliance Photo is an annual exhibition of photography organised for the past few years in November by the Alliance Francaise de Kandy. This year’s event is scheduled to start at Alliance Francaise Art Gallery, 642 Peradeniya Road, Kandy on November 14, 2008. The Exhibition will remain open till November 21, 2008.

This year’s exhibition is a combined effort of two photographers from Kandy - Mr. Palitha Handunge, Vice President and Mr. Susantha Kandaddarage, Member of the Alliance Francaise de Kandy.

Both developed an interest in the art of photography from their school days and started their career in school photographic clubs and later engaged in local photographic club activities in Kandy. In the last few years, they extended their service at the national level and served as Executive Committee Members of the Institute of Sri Lankan Photographers. Their previous works have been selected for many national and international photographic exhibitions and competitions and won awards.

Through this exhibition they present some of their new creations.
They pay attention to capture the colour, shapes and rhythm in and around us and compose something new for our eyes.

Palitha Handunge is working as a senior staff audio visual production officer attached to the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya and Susantha Kandaddarage is the Chairman of the Iris Digital Color Laboratories Pvt Ltd. Both are engaged in teaching photography to the school children and university students through their photographic clubs and societies.

The month of November in France, and especially in Paris, is dedicated to the art of photography and Alliance Française de Kandy also celebrates the same in their premises during the month of November every year from 2002.

Commercial Credit Limited continues to help Kandy General Hospital neuro wards 73 and 74

The Kandy based Finance Company Commercial Credit Limited recently donated 05 Oxygen Wall Flow Meters to the Neuro Wards 73 and 74 of the General Hospital, Kandy at a simple ceremony attended by the Company’s Chairman, Directors, Staff and the Hospital Director, Doctors and nursing staff of the two wards.

The Company Chairman Mrs. Vagdevi Fernando addressing the gathering on the occasion thanked the Director Dr. Samarasinghe, Doctors and Nursing Staff of wards 73 and 74 for having given Commercial Credit Limited the opportunity to donate the Oxygen Wall Flow Meters which is an absolute necessity for all patients in the Neuro Ward. At the moment, there are only three Oxygen Wall Flow Meters and with the donation of five, the total amount will be eight. Between the two wards, they could manage to relive the patients of their breathing complications to a certain extent and make life more comfortable. Mrs. Fernando said that they hope to donate more Oxygen Wall Flow Meters in the coming years, and hope to equip all beds someday. The greatest contribution that one could make to another is to relieve people of pain and suffering. She said that the medical and nursing professions were the noblest professions since they were dealing with human lives. She further said, that Commercial Credit Limited will continue to maintain these two wards in the coming years.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director Dr. Samarasinghe said that it was a meritorious act to help the sick. He stated that these two wards were completely re-furbished by Commercial Credit Limited in the year 2007. He thanked the Chairman, Directors and staff of Commercial Credit Limited for their donation of Oxygen Wall Flow Meters and for their continuous help to maintain these two wards, thereby making life pleasant for both the patients, the doctors and nursing staff.

Maduwgedara visits Trinco

T. B. Maduwegedara Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Germany visited Trincomalee and met Governor Eastern Province Mohan Wijewickrama on October 31, 2008 in Trincomalee. The Governor spoke of the development activities in the Eastern Province. M. Mahroof, Additional Secretary/Consular, T. Z. A. Samsudeen, Senior Director General/Middle East and Africa and Rodney Perera, Director General/America’s Division were also present at the occasion

Most Hardworking Steward of the Year 2008

RUSSEL’S New Building at No. 820/1 Maradana Road, Punchi Borella was opened on October 25, along with their 20th Anniversary Awards Night with glamour.

New IT Centre for Bosath Children’s Foundation

A new IT Centre for the children of Colombo South was declared open on the 20th of April at Rathanaarama Temple, Polhengoda. This project is funded by Bosath Children’s Education Foundation. The administration and management of this IT project is by the Children’s Upliftment Programme. The project will provide an opportunity for the children of the area to gain knowledge in the field of Information Technology free of charge

The classes for the 2nd batch were started on November 1, 2008. 21 children were selected for the 2nd batch and they were from different schools in the area. Mr. Charith Kannangara – Lecturer IT Centre, made a valuable speech highlighting the importance of this IT course to the children and the parents.

Ms. N.T.A. Dissanayake – Director CUP, Mr. Madushanka Abeygunawardena – Member CUP, Mr. Harsha Gomes – Member CUP, participated at the event.

Billy

Born to a musical family, namely the Tennysons, Billy started his journey in music at a very early age. To the 3rd generation before him, Billy’s father who was a veteran musician, Tennyson Fernando, was one of the best known musical instrument manufacturers as well as a performer and teacher of music.

He absorbed the music he grew up with and enhanced with his talent and knowledge and achieved a very high standard of musical ability. His musical talents were tried, tested and proven from the very young age of 7.

Billy is currently involved with a Recording Studio as the sound engineer and composer. While producing music albums at the studio, he is also the producer of soundtracks for Radio and TV commercials.

Being the son of the well known Tennyson Fernando, he is a manufacturer of musical instruments by nature. He is also the Proprietor of Tennyson Guitars; as well as being a tutor of guitar and drums at Tennyson School of Music.

Encompassing all his knowledge and experience, Billy has completed his 1st solo album consisting of 10 Sinhalese songs. The songs are a compilation of various musical styles and themes, varying from love to war.

Most of the lyrics have been written by Billy himself, while some of them are his very own life experiences. The lyrics are based on the hearts of young lovers. A song dedicated to a mothers love and a song written hoping for peace in our country is also included in this album.
Breaking the norm of Hip-Hop and R&B, Billy is introducing music with more intensity and emotion using the magical sounds of his guitar.

The album will be released with M-Entertainment and distributed island wide in the form of audio CD’s and cassettes. Two song videos of the album have been produced and are currently played on TV and radio.

People of Embilipitiya unite to eradicate drugs and smoking menace

On International Day to Eradicate Drugs and Smoking, the National Youth Services Council of Embilipitiya launched a special programme at NYSC Centre at Embilipitiya recently.

A poster exhibition against Drugs and Smoking, a banner exhibition as a mark of respect to Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thero for being present at the Drugs and Smoking Eradication Act in Parliament and delivering lectures on evil effects of Drugs and Smoking included in the special programme.

At this programme, Dr. Indumini Wattegama, Psychiatrist of Embilipitiya hospital, David Bamunugama, member of Amadyapa Sabha, Embilipitiya and Excise Dept. officers were billed to deliver special lectures.

Singithi Poth Gula opens at Polhengoda

The opening of another Little Library (Singithi Poth Gula) at Rathana Arama Temple, Polhengoda was held on November 1, 2008. N.T.A. Dissanayake – Director CUP, Madushanka Abeygunawardena – Member CUP, Harsha Gomes – Member CUP, were participants at the event. This event was organized by the children of the Rathana Arama Sunday School. The Singithi Poth Gula was named as “Rathana Singithi Poth Gula.” Rani Weerasooriya contributed a book cupboard and a room. Read Sri Lanka donated valuable books to make the event a success

Visit of Palestinian President to Sri Lanka

The Palestinian President, Mahamood Abbas, who visited Sri Lanka recently met with the members of the Sri Lanka Palestine Solidarity Committee.
