“ It is not a monotonous type of work” - Amila

By Lakna Paranamanna
The Nation’s fortnightly series, which features personality profiles of catwalk stars, recently met Amila Karunanayake, a popular upcoming model, to ask about his recent endeavors and ambitions.
• Name : Amila Karunanayake
• Age : 25 years
• School : Nalanda College
Q: What was your childhood ambition?
A:
I dreamt of becoming an engineer ever since I can remember.

Q: What are your interests?
A:
My main interest is designing.

Q: How did you get into this field?
A:
I entered the field of fashion as a designer. My first step as a model was for a pageant which was held last year - Man of the Year. I saw an advertisement in a newspaper and felt like applying just to try out my luck and even though I did not expect it, I was chosen. I won the Man of the Year title at this pageant and afterwards during the same year I also partook in Mr. Sri Lanka for Mr. International 2007 and also won the title which entitled me to represent Sri Lanka in the Mr. International pageant which was held in Malaysia.

Q: What was the experience of participating in the pageant like?
A:
Although by the time I entered modeling I was not a guinea pig in the industry, it was my first time experience as a model on a ramp. So until I got used to the action I did feel a bit uncomfortable and nervous. But I did not let it show; it did not take me long to get used to the action but the whole experience was also very enjoyable.

Q: What do you like about modelling?
A:
I am not a full time model, but the favourite part about modelling is that this is not a job where you sit at a desk for a set period of hours. It is not monotonous and the type of work we do varies with each designer we get to work with. Also one gets the opportunity to meet a lot of distinguished people and build a lot of contacts. A lot of opportunities open up to you when you are engaged in this field.

Q: You have also appeared in commercials and song visuals. How did you get the opportunity?
A:
I got the opportunity through my friends and since they have spotted me on ramps and photo shoots, some approached me with invitations. I have not appeared in many commercials or song visuals and I have only explored a limited number of opportunities in those fields since I am occupied in this field only part time. I have appeared in a few commercials for companies like Sri Lanka Telecom but so far I have only appeared in one song visual which I finished working last week. It was for a song visual done for 6th Lane and the visual was released this week.

Q: Where are you currently employed at?
A:
I am currently working as a fashion designer for Carlos Menswear brand and it has been two years since I started working there.

Q: How is the support you get from your family and friends?
A:
They support me a lot and they have been my strength throughout my life. I feel very fortunate to be having such a supportive family and friends.

Q: What are your future plans?
A:
I want to improve myself as a designer as well as a model. I also want to become a fashion icon in Sri Lanka and develop the brand that I am working for.
