Memorable Sri Lankan Test and ODI’s Cricket encounters (1975-1995)

Sanjeewa Mahesh Perera, a young author and sports journalist has launched another book titled Memorable Sri Lankan Test and ODI’s Cricket encounters (1975-1995) “Sri Lankawe amaraneeya test saha ekadina tharanga (1975-1995)”

This book features detailed description of all the cricket encounters played by Sri Lanka cricket team from first international test cricket match played in England in 1975 to Benson and Hedges one day match series before victorious 1996 World Cup match. This book highlight the victories and defeats, match scores and records achieved. The author attempts in this book to reveal all traials and tribulations faced by the Sri Lanka team till they won the world cup in 1996. This book comments on interesting incidents of those matches also.

Heads of foreign missions on a tour to heritage sites

In a bid to showcase Sri Lanka as a tourist destination with diverse attractions, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau stepped forward recently to invite the Colombo based heads of foreign missions in the country, to visit heritage sites of special interest. In the first of a series of tours and other specialised activities to continue into 2009, several ambassadors and other members of the delegations representing countries such as Russia, Indonesia, Iran, and the European Union were taken to the sacred cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and the rock fortress of Sigiriya, to familiarize the group to ancient cities of repute, in our country.

St. Joseph’s, Bandarawela celebrates centenary year

De La Salle Brothers bought the property called ‘Mount Saint Joseph’ at Bandarawela in 1906 for the purpose of a sanatorium. There they built a bungalow and a small school and conducted this St. Joseph’s school from February 1, 1909.

The small school commenced with the Irish Bro. Simon Matthew – Patrick Purchell as principal. Seventeen boys were admitted, the first entrant was Master Stephen Peirts.

After the school was taken over by the government, several principals worked hard to make it an up and coming institution in the Uva Province.

K.H.P. Jayatissa, an officer of Education Administrative Service is the present principal. He is the first past pupil to be the Principal of the College.
Now the student population is over 2000. The tutorial staff exceeds 128.

Blood donation campaign for soldiers

A blood donation campaign for the soldiers organised by the Nawala Vimala Viharastha Pragna Pradeepa Past Pupils Association will be held on February 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vihara premises.
Both men and women over 18 and below 60 years with weight of over 50 kgs can donate blood. The donors are advised to bring their national identity cards.
