UPFA gears for no

Even before the elections for the Central and North Western
Provincial Councils are concluded, the government sprang another
surprise at the Opposition last week: the dissolution of the Western
Provincial Council.
This was expected for some time now, but the abrupt announcement caught
quite a few by surprise, especially as the Council was singled out for
dissolution, with the Uva and Southern Provincial Councils still in
operation under their current administrations.

Who wanted to KILL me?
It was just another Friday for me. Like any other Friday, on
Friday January 23 too I started my routine by getting up at 4:30
in the morning. As usual I started my morning exercises in the
front garden. I do my walking also inside the garden. On that
day, I felt a strange uneasiness in my mind. I did not know why,
and I never told anyone about it.
I usually walk from one end to the other in the garden. Even
though it was early dawn, there was sufficient light in the
garden. However, I could not see anything beyond the garden
wall.

Gallant Kandamby knock fails to
secure win
Thilina Kandamby played a lone hand scoring a career best
innings of 93 not out off 129 balls (9 fours), but could not
prevent India from winning the second one-day international by
15 runs and taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series at the R
Premadasa Stadium under lights yesterday.
Sri Lanka chasing an Indian total of 256-9 were eventually
dismissed in the final over for 241 with the last three wickets
falling to run outs. In fact after Chamara Kapugedera’s
departure at 187 in the 43rd over, none of the late order
batters could stay long
enough to lend support to Kandamby. The
last four wickets fell for 13 runs as the asking rate mounted
steadily against tight Indian bowling and sharp fielding. The
result of three run outs told the story how much pressure India
exerted on the Lankan batting.

Making the right
decision
It
is encouraging to see former cricketers officiating as umpires
at international level. The latest to join the ranks was former
Sri Lanka off-spinner Kumar Dharmasena who made his ODI debut in
the first match of the on-going one-day international series
between Sri Lanka and India at Dambulla on Wednesday. But
watching the manner in which Dharmasena conducted himself it was
quite evident that he was under tremendous pressure from the Sri
Lankan team to give decisions in their favour. Eventually he
crumbled under the pressure and gave the world’s best batsman
Sachin Tendulkar leg before wicket to a ball that pitched
outside leg stump. Incidentally it was his first decision on
international debut and what...

“UNP has given the best
deals to people”
The United National Party (UNP) has saluted the brave soldiers for
their success in the Wanni. Besides, the party has also praised
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government for prosecuting the war
to the end. The party, while congratulating the government, has also
warned that the failure to evolve a political package soon, would give
rise to various other problems. UNP stalwart John Amaratunga says the
UNP is willing to help the government provided it shows a keen interest
to find a solution to the ethnic problem. Amaratunga says the
government’s failure in not placing before the APRC its own proposal is
something that worries the main opposition. “Simply calling us
to help the government is not going to really help them.
