Aspiring young singer
By Nabiha Ariff
The music industry in Sri Lanka is now experiencing its peak in
terms of newcomers. All of whom keep introducing new sounds,
trends and music to the industry. This definitely is an
advantage to the local music industry and additional competition
for those already in the field. Sanka Dineth, 22, is yet another
aspiring young singer who believes strongly in doing something
different and giving a new angle to the music industry. After
coming in sixth place at the Sirasa Superstar Season 2 in 2008,
Sanka is living his dream and enjoying his passion for singing
even more. Sanka spoke to The Nation about his passion for music
and hopes of getting better at singing.
Q: What sort of music interests you the most?
A: I love western and eastern music and enjoy mixing the two
and producing a fusion. It is creative and according to me the
most interesting type of music. I like creating music and
writing lyrics, fusion music I believe is what best suits me.
Q: Do you come from a background of singers?
A: Not really but ironically my entire family can sing well.
That is my parents and younger sister. My mother always said
that I was a good singer and encouraged me to go further up this
Q: How has it been after the Superstar competition?
A: It was one of the best things that could happen to me. I
became famous for my singing and people recognised me as a
singer. It was the biggest break for me and it is because of
Superstar that I was able to continue singing and start the
process of becoming a professional singer.
Q: What are you working on currently?
A: I am currently working on my debut album which will have
12 songs and will be released in March. The album will include
some of my most popular songs like, Oba, Yan Tham Vath and Heena
Kathandara. Currently I am also busy doing music for a film
called Nino In Live. I am really glad I got this opportunity and
hope to see this as a big break for me like Superstar was. My
website will also be re-launched after 14th February, I am
looking forward to that since it will be a unique concept.
Q: What do you think is the best part of singing?
A: It is difficult to describe the feeling or say it in
words because for me music comes naturally and I am not doing it
for the sake of it. I love it and every time I sing I genuinely
feel it. I am also happy that for my passion I have also got
awards. The visual of Oba was awarded for special effects and
the award was given by a U.S software company.
Q: How do you spend your leisure time?
A: I have quite a hectic life since I am also a student
doing my degree in marketing. However, when I do have free time
I like listening to music, sleeping, watching films and spending
time with my loved ones.
Q: Have you got a good support system?
A: Definitely, my family and friends have always been there.
I would like to give them a big thank you and also Gamini Perera
who helped make my dreams come true.
Q: What do you hope to contribute in this wide field of music?
A: I simply want to genuinely come up with something new and
different. It should come from my heart and I am waiting for
that because music has always been an important part in my life.
