Case of the
missing Gen. Kobbekaduwa statue
By Mallika Etulgama
The missing statue of late war hero General Denzil
Kobbekaduwa constructed on a commission issued by
the Kandy Municipal Council was raised at the
monthly meeting on February 27 of the Kandy
Municipal Council by Attorney-at-Law M.P. Jayasinghe
He said that he organised a Committee to erect a
statue for late General Kobbekaduwa, but at the same
time he was informed that the Kandy Municipal
Council was making arrangements for the construction
and erection of a statue for the hero. So, the
committee was disbanded. And now there is no statue
except a pillar at Byrde Park in Centre of Kandy.
He questioned as to where this so called Statute of
Kobbekaduwa could be.
Mayor L.B. Aluvihare who presided said that the
statue was constructed but the wife of General
Kobbekaduwa had rejected it and therefore this
Statue could not be erected.
