President to meet Tamil parties

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has invited all Tamil political parties for a parley to find a lasting solution to the ethnic issue plaguing the country.

Top government sources said that all Tamil political parties including the TNA have been asked in writing to agree on a convenient date for such a meeting and the government is waiting a response from them.

They said the parley with the Tamil parties is very likely to take place once the President completes his scheduled state visits to Nepal and Libya early this month.

The President in his invitation is said to have stressed on the need to find a solution emanating from the grass root level rather than one promoted by the Tamil elite based in Colombo.

The President had also stressed on the need for such a solution to the UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Sir John Holmes during his recent discussions. President had pointed out the greater need to provide security to affected Tamil people to carry on with their vocations before all else.

Even some of the IDPs who are now fleeing LTTE held areas are said to be arriving with large sums of cash. Therefore, the President had stressed on the need to provide them safe avenues to productively invest those savings.
