| Slain Galle opposition leader
had murder charges against him

Police teams investigating the broad daylight murder of Galle
Municipal Council Opposition Leader Deshabandu Dushyantha
Seneviratne are yet to make a breakthrough into the killing.
However, the Police said they have received vital information
that would lead to several arrests soon.
Three Police teams have been deployed by acting DIG Southern
Range Jayantha Kulatillake under the supervision of SP
Premathileke Hettiarachchi and Galle Division SSP Keerthi Silva.
Forty-year-old Seneviratne was shot dead in the presence of
his children at Beligahahandiya in Galle in the morning of July
22, by an unidentified gunman who had followed him in a
motorcycle with another person.
He was shot when he was getting down from his car to buy
breakfast for his children on their way to school.
Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera told The Nation that the
slain Opposition Leader had two murder cases committed on
3.09.1992 and 21.04.1999 at the Galle High Court.
A pending murder case bearing, No.1,677 will be taken up in
Court on August 26 while he had been released by the Court from
the murder case bearing No.2,832 on the Attorney General’s
advice on July 15.
A senior Police officer who is involved in investigations told
The Nation on condition of anonymity, that Seneviratne was a
suspect in the murder case bearing No. 1,677 where Ananda
Seneviratne of Jambuketiya, Athiligoda, Galle was killed by
attacking him with swords and clubs on 3.09.1992. According to
Police, seven suspects had been involved in the case including
assassinated opposition leader Seneviratne.
The other murder case bearing No.2,832, from which
Seneviratne was acquitted a few days prior to his murder, was
for killing Yakgahahewage Prasanna Wickramasinghe and Laksiri
Wickramasinghe by attacking them with iron rods. The other four
suspects involved in this murder case are said to be related.
Seneviratna was also tipped to be the chief ministerial
candidate of the UNP in the forthcoming Southern Provincial
Council election.
