A life of music

By Sarashi Samarasinghe
Some become musicians by learning the subject while others accomplish it through inborn talent.
Ranjith Liyanage is one who has been in the music field for three decades.
“My latest creation, ‘Sri Lanka Ape Bhoomi’, is a song dedicated to President Mahinda Rajapaksa,” said Liyanage.
The music, melodies and lyrics are by him.

“The inspiration to create this song came from the recent victory in the war,” he added.
In addition to this song, he intends releasing a new CD of 14 songs.

“I have only completed two songs at the moment, that is ‘Jeewithaya Pura’ and ‘Me Athmaya’,” stated Liyanage.
According to Liyanage, Hemasiri Halpita, has done the lyrics for both songs, while Nihal Jayawardhane provided the music.
“The remixing and the melodies for the two songs were done by me,” said Liyanage.

Liyanage entered the music scene in 1974, with the formation of his own band, ‘Golden Arrows’.
“The band was together from 1974 to 1979, with Nihal Dias and Arnest Soyza on lead guitars, Jorge De Silva on bass guitar, Morris De Silva on rhythm guitar, Ranjith Dias on keyboards, Greshan Ananda did the vocals, along with myself on drums,” said Liyanage.

According to Liyanage he formed another band named ‘Oasis’ in 1983 with Senaka Ranasinghe on lead guitar, Roy De Silva on bass guitar and vocals, Elston Dharmawardana on rhythm guitar and vocals, Rizni on the keyboard and vocals and Liyanage on drums.

“The ‘Oasis’ second line-up in 1987 included myself on the drums and vocals, Shobi Perera on bass and vocals, Sanjaya Perera on keyboard and vocals, late Bernard Janz on lead guitar and vocals and Gehan De Silva on rhythm guitar and vocals,” stated Liyanage.

Liyanage further stated that in 1985 he went to Saudi Arabia and worked there for 11 years as an audio visual specialist.
“Looking back at years gone by, we have covered so many indoor and outdoor concerts, outstation shows, exhibitions, fairs, weddings and so many events,” said Liyanage.

According to Liyanage, in 2007, he once again came up with a new band named ‘Melody Makers’ where they have got the three-piece band as well as the full band to perform.
“I received my primary education at the St. Matthew’s College, Dematagoda, and continued my higher studies at Stafford College Maradana,” stated Liyanage.

His father T.A. Liyanage, a former army officer encouraged him in the field of music.
“My father was the first person to established an oriental band in the army. He bought me my first drum set,” added Liyanage.
Concluding his conversation with The Nation, TV Guide, Liyanage stated that so many of his friends, relatives and loved ones have helped him on his way in the field of music, where, at present, he is operating one of his own studios at his residence in Kotikawatta, Buthgama, named ‘Nomix’, with the intention of helping youngsters entering the field.
