By Sarashi
Samarasinghe
Swarnavahini, which created a record in the country’s
reality television history by being the first and only
channel to concurrently hold the grand finale of three
television reality programmes on the same platform, is now
coming up with what is seen as the country’s biggest ever
reality television programme called ‘Mega Star’.
‘Mega Star’ is a reality television programme involving 36
popular personalities with singing competency representing
diverse fields.Among the participants are popular actors,
actresses, politicians, sportsmen, media personalities and
others who possess a flair for singing.
“The main intention of having this kind of a programme is
not winning but to have a friendly relationship between the
participants who are representing different fields,” said
director programmes, Swarnavahini, Buddhika Kulasekera.
He further stated that this idea was first given to him
by Sajeewa Prathapasinghe almost one year ago.
The much hyped programme telecast every Saturday and Sunday
from 9.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. will kick off from December 5
on Swarnavahini and will last for a period of ten months.
The fate of the singing stars of ‘Mega Star’ will depend on
the short message service (SMS) votes they receive every
week and the winner will receive the biggest ever prize
money offered in Sri Lanka’s reality television history.
“In the first round all the 36 participants are going to
be divided into six and they would be given six weeks to
perform. Within that six weeks, on each Saturday they would
be performing and on Sunday one of the participants will be
out from the lot,” said director of ‘Mega Star’, Amila Nuwan
Wadasinghe.
He further stated that the final round will include 12
participants and out of the 12 it will be reduced to six and
out of the six it will be reduced to three.
“The ‘Mega Star’ will be chosen out of the final three
participants,” he added.
The mega competition will be held in a striking and novel
format while the panel will include veteran musician Shirley
Waijantha, film star turned politician Rosy Senanayake and
minister Mervyn Silva.
Lahiru Mudalige and Chula Padmendra will host the ‘Mega
Star’ programme while Aruna Lian will be in-charge of the
music, Darshana Chathuranga Abeysinghe the choreography and
Susantha Nanayakkara the background sets.
When the TV Guide spoke to some of the artistes who are
taking part in this competition, actress Nilanthi Dias was
the first person to convey her ideas.
“I have shown my talents in many competitions similar to
this earlier so that I have a good experience in taking part
in competitions as such. I hope this would be a great
opportunity for all the artistes to demonstrate their hidden
talents and I hope that I will receive an excellent support
from all my fans throughout the competition,” said Dias.
“I hope that this would be a good entertaining programme
and that it would be some kind of a unique programme because
our fans have never seen such a programme before,” said
actor Saliya Sathyajith.
Journalist of the Sunday Lakbima, Saman Priyankara Nammunige
stated that this is a good competition because there are
participants who are representing different fields.
“There is no age limit as such for this competition and it
all depends upon the ability which you have for singing,” he
added.
Next in line was actor, Rayan Van Royan to deliver his
ideas regarding the competition.
“I am a new comer in the field of acting and I think this
competition is a good opportunity for all the artistes. I am
looking forward to doing my level best at this competition,”
said Royan.

(PC) and actor, Ranjan Ramanayake stated that this is the
biggest reality show ever of the celebrities.

| Kanyavi-Breaking
up is hard to do |
Breakages of family lives have been a common incident
today in society. This has affected not only the society but
also one’s existence.
‘Kanyavi’ is one of the rarest movies ever made in the
history of the Sri Lankan cinema which reflects the bonding
between a man and a woman and also between a husband and a
wife.
A special premium of this magnificent movie was shown at the
Tharangani theatre located at the National Film Corporation
(NFC) premises on November 12.
The first phase of the movie shows us a happy family which
includes Janaka Senanayake who is a rich, well educated and
respectable man, hosting a dignifying position in the
society.
His wife Imaya too is a respectable woman who leads a long,
simple and traditional life style respecting her husband and
assisting him in all his deeds.
Although the family carries along a happy family life,
Janaka’s peaceful home front becomes shattered when he meets
up with a helpless pretty young woman named, Kumari.
This incident marks the turning point of the movie. The
director has made a beautiful effort in making the viewers
aware of the storm which has occurred within Janaka’s mind
in choosing between Imaya and Kumari.
Janaka’s lustful mind pleads over the comfort of Kumari
while Imaya gets isolated with her child.
In the meantime, Madawa who is a friend of Janaka, who is
also a movie star, attempts to take advantage of the
abandoned Imaya while the film actress Tharushi pleads for
the love of Madawa.
Such incidents are a common occurrence among families
nowadays but the significance here is, Imaya is striving to
protect the dignity of Janaka who is obviously being
unfaithful to her.
Janaka almost forgets his pride, his family, his duties and
falls over on his forbidden love.
The director has made a great effort in visualising his
family life and his private life as two separate entities
but offered to the public woven together.
For an example the birthday of Janaka’s daughter is being
celebrated without him by the rest of the family at home
while it is contrasted with how Janaka celebrates Kumari’s
birthday with her forgetting all about his family.
In the movie it has also been clearly noted how Janaka
becomes guilty when he remembers his wife and child.
Ultimately, Janaka recognises the reality between the
bonding which takes place between him and Kumari as she
abandons Janaka and seeks for an affection of another man.
Anyhow, the movie was strengthened by Imaya’s character when
she takes a straight decision whether to live with Janaka
forgiving him for all his sins or to destroy him.
But by seeing the innocent face of her daughter who becomes
tremendously happy at Janaka’s presence at home, makes Imaya
come to a decision that, she should forget about all the
offenses which has been done by Janaka in the past.
This decision which was made by Imaya brings the family back
together without making it dispersed.
To make aware of an actual bonding in a family, ‘Kanyavi’
will be in theatres from December 4.

| Madhuri Dixit becomes Indira Gandhi
|
There was always confusion as to who can play the lead
role of Indira Gandhi best. Well, Madhuri Dixit has been
selected to essay the role of former Indian Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi in a two-part biopic by filmmaker Krishna
Shah.
Krishna Shah, who was nominated for the Golden Globe awards,
has been writing the script for ‘Mother: the Indira Gandhi
Story’ for the last 23 years. And at last, after the hard
work and collecting the entire information, he is now
planning to bring it on the Big Screen by the end of 2011,
as reported by ‘Variety’ magazine.
After he finalised the script, it was difficult to finalise
who would play the lead, and then he finalised Bollywood’s
biggest actress Madhuri Dixit to essay the role.
It is a very ambitious project, and will be one of the
important projects of Madhuri’s life. She is in the United
States (U.S), and has not been reachable to comment on it. |
| Ranbir, Kat in
Basu’s next |
| Buzz is Director Anurag Basu who is busy in the
post-production of his film ‘Kites’ is contemplating his
next with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
Anurag Basu has been working hard on the post production
of Hrithik Roshan and the Brazilian beauty Barbara Mori
starred in ‘Kites’, which will be released in January next
year. Producer Rakesh Roshan wants ‘Kites’ to appeal on a
global level and has dubbed the film both in English and
Hindi, along with showcasing the teaser of ‘Kites’ at the
Cannes Film Festival this year. The film has been taking
most of Basu’s time and energy, but that has not stopped him
from contemplating his next romantic film. Sources say the
director has a romantic script in mind, for which he needs a
fresh pairing.
The source further adds, “While ‘Kites’ is Anurag’s first
priority, he still has a 3-film contract with UTV, on which
he has begun work already. He has a beautiful romantic
script in mind, and wanted new faces for the roles in the
film. After watching ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, he was
taken aback with the chemistry of Ranbir and Katrina and
feels that Ranbir has a lot of potential to join the big
league very soon. He will be meeting both actors very soon
to have a story discussion with them, and he cannot wait to
get them on board for his next.” |
