Nearly 500 unemployed Ayurveda doctors, graduated
since 2004, are to launch a fast unto death campaign
from Wednesday (2) until they are granted
appointments by the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine.
President of All Ceylon Health Service Union
(ACHSU), Gamini Kumarasinghe told The Nation, even
though they have requested the Ministry to provide
employment, authorities have failed to do so due to
inefficiency of the officials.
“We do not understand why these 500 doctors
cannot be recruited when there are nearly 700
vacancies in Ayurvedic hospitals. The Ministry has
taken the future of these graduates for granted,”
Kumarasinghe charged.
He further said that neither the current Ayurvedic
students nor the Ayurvedic graduates are aware of
the guidelines set out by the Department of
Ayurvedic Medicines or the number of intakes.
“Such problem would not have occurred if there
was a National Ayurveda Policy. We are not surprised
by the absence of such policy as there is not even a
National Drug Policy in the country,” Kumarasinghe
asserted.
He also noted that these unemployed graduates have
been conducting fasting campaigns since October, but
the Ministry officials have either taken these
graduates for granted or the officials are
incompetent to resolve the issue.
He added that the officials at the Ministry of
Indigenous Medicine will be made answerable and held
responsible if something happens to these unemployed
graduates: “What’s the purpose in gaining a degree
from a Government University if there are no
employments after completing the academic years?
This is absurd and unjust, especially when there are
vacancies in Ayurvedic hospitals island-wide,”
Kumarasinghe opined. |
