Kandy Hospital Renal Unit running out of medicine
Kidney Protection Society (KPS) claims that they are running out of funds to purchase more medicines for Kidney patients at the Nephrology and Renal Unit of the Kandy Teaching Hospital.
According to an officer of the Kidney Protection Society, it has spent every single rupee they have to purchase the essential drugs such as Cyclosporine and Cellcept for the patients.

“There are nearly 700 kidney patients and our society had to spend Rs. 600 per patient daily. We have spent more than Rs. 420,000 for the past three weeks for purchasing the essential drugs,” he said.

He further said even though they have requested the Ministry of Healthcare to provide the needed drugs, they have failed to do so due to incompetence of the officials in the Ministry of Healthcare. “We requested the President Mahinda Rajapksa to intervene in this matter, but nothing has happened. He is not taking any steps to provide the needed drugs, nor does the Ministry of Healthcare,” he added.

He also said that the Health Ministry has many “invalid” and “ridiculous” answers to the unavailability of the drugs. The official also said that the Ministry is ignoring the matter without taking any steps to provide the medicine.
“This shows the negligence of the officials. And I am not able to understand why they cannot import the drugs according to the requirement. We are not asking for our families, we are asking for these patients as only they know the pain they are going through,” he asserted. (KA)
