The quintessential hurdler at it again
After months of intense speculation as to where his loyalties lay, the United National Party’s (UNP) National Organiser S.B. Dissanayake finally took the plunge and crossed over to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) last week.
Sumanaweera Banda Dissanayake, ‘SB’ to all, is of course, no stranger to controversy. He is as colourful and controversial as he ever was, be it as the Minister of Samurdhi Affairs, Minister of Sports, General Secretary of the SLFP, or even as a loud-mouthed opposition parliamentarian...

On Mangala’s frolics in a
‘pariah’ nation

Mangala likes to be important. That’s no crime of course. It is afterall a reasonable enough consolation prize for those who will never be king to be in the role of king-maker (or queen-maker for that matter). Mangala makes it out that poor little Sarath Fonseka had to go on his knees before Mangala and submit to some kind of interview. Mangala speaks as though he checked Fonseka out, interrogated him on statements made, positions taken etc., and finally patted the man on his back, saying ‘Ok, Sarath, you’ve satisfied me.

Majority prefer use of UDRS
The Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS) or the referral system as it is easily identified as has been in the news for quite a long time largely because of India’s refusal to implement it during the recently concluded three-Test series against Sri Lanka which they won 2-0.
The reasons for not executing it in the series have been well documented in these columns in the past weeks and also in the local media. India’s main objective was to win the Test series and become the No. 1 ranked Test team in the world for the first time which they have done.

History of the All Blacks
war chant

Haka is the traditional dance form of the Māori of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment. Although the use of a haka by the All Blacks rugby union team has made one type of haka familiar, it has led to misconceptions. Haka is not exclusively war dances, nor are they performed only by men. Some are performed by women, others by mixed groups, and some simple forms of the haka are performed by children.
