Infant found in garbage dump
An infant found dumped about two hours after birth in a garbage pit last Friday morning is now recuperating in the infant unit of the Nawalapitiya Base Hospital.
A team from the Maskeliya Police had on a tip off found the infant in a garbage pit near the sub post office of the Lakam town in Maskeliya along the Maskeliya-Norton Bridge main road.
A 23-year old Tamil woman, suspected to be the mother of the abandoned infant, was arrested by the Maskeliya police on the same day.
The suspect was subsequently admitted to the Maskeliya District Hospital for treatment for post-child birth pains. She is a resident of Lekamwatte in Maskeliya.
According to the hospital authorities the child had been delivered in the early hours of last Friday.
A similar incident took place last Monday in Eheliyagoda when a day old infant was found alive dumped in a lavatory.
The Maskeliya Police is conducting investigations.

Man run over by cab
A 62 -year- old man, who was knocked down by a cab near the Piduru kovil in the Vellavali police division, succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Batticaloa Hospital last Friday. The victim, Nadarajah was a resident of Kurumanveli.
The driver of the cab has been arrested by the Vellavali police.

Cyclist mowed down
A 49- year- old push cyclist, who was knocked down by a speeding private bus on the Galle Road in Wadduwa, succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Panadura Hospital last Friday.
Police said that the cyclist had been on the yellow pedestrian crossing trying to get to the other side of the road opposite Welaratne Jewellers when he was mowed down by a Colombo bound private bus.
The victim has been identified as A.D. Nandakumar, a resident of Mahawadduwa.
The driver of the bus has been taken into custody by the Wadduwa police.
A 24-year- old motorcyclist, who was run over by a lorry on the Vavunia – Jaffna road last Friday succumbed to injuries while being transported to the Jaffna hospital. The victim, Shanmuganathan Sujeewan was a resident of Jaffna.
The driver of the lorry has been taken to police custody. Mankulam Police is further investigating.

Pillion rider killed
A 29-year old pillion rider, D. Indika Chaminda, who fell off a motorbicycle in Rajangana in the Thambuththegama Police area, succumbed to his injuries at the Anuradhapura Hospital last Friday.
The motorbicycle had been ridden by the victim’s friend when it skidded and veered off the road last Thursday.

T56 rifle, ammunition found
The state intelligence services unit officers attached to the Karaidiyanaru police, found a T56 rifle, two ammunition pouches together with 51, T56 bullets at Kitula in the Karaidiyanaru police division last Friday morning.
No suspects have been identified yet. The Karaidiyanaru police isconducting further investigations.
