Hundreds injured during Vesak

By Sarashi Samarasinghe

More than 250 people were admitted to the Accident Service of the Colombo National Hospital with injuries caused while celebrating Vesak in the last three days.
National Hospital’s Senior Nurse Pushpa Ramyani Soyza said that some 255 people were admitted following injuries and the majority were involved in road accidents.
She added that some of the accidents were caused while putting up Vesak lanterns.
“There were several incidents of receiving electric shocks, slips and fallings as well,” she added.
According to her, about 100 patients out of the 255 had left after receiving treatment.
“The injured were from the age group 15-60 years,” said Soyza.
Most of the injuries were caused when groups of people have gone out at night to celebrate Vesak.
“The public should be cautious these days, when they are engaging in different activities, especially during this festivity period,” said Soyza.
