A journey through the splendour of Opera

Classical Evergreens; Series of concerts for Classical music lovers

The music lovers in Sri Lanka are in for a rare musical treat as Sewalanka Foundation together with Concerts Norway, Aru Sri Art Theatre and the Norwegian Embassy Present ‘Classical Evergreens’, a journey through Opera.

The concert features three internationally acclaimed Norwegian Opera Singers, Rita Heigre (Soprano), Nils Harald Sødal (Tenor), Anna Einarsson (Mezzo-soprano) and one of the finest Pianists James Duddle.
They will come alive on stage with public shows on June 15 at the Russian Cultural Centre Auditorium at 7.00pm and on June 20 at the Engineering Faculty Theatre (E.O.E. Pereira Theatre), Kandy at 6.30pm. In addition they will perform concerts and workshops for children and the youth in Colombo at Ladies College Auditorium, Musaeus College Auditorium, Visakha Vidyalaya Auditorium, in Negombo at Newstead Girl’s School Auditorium, in Kandy at Trinity College Hall and in Galle at Siri Dhamma College Hall, Sangamittha College Auditorium, Mahinda College Auditorium and Richmond College Auditorium. The entrance for all these concerts will be free of charge.

They will also hold a five day master class for the students of University of Visual and Performing Arts which will conclude with a joint performance by the artistes and students on June 22, 10.00am, at the Lionel Silva Memorial Hall. There will be two more workshops for aspiring young singers on June 16, 5.30pm at the Institute of Western Music and Speech, Colombo and on June 20 from 9.00am onwards at 151, Riverdale Road, Kandy. The workshops are free of charge and those interested can register by mailing to rashani@sewalanka.org.
There will also be a collaborative music performance by the artistes and the Symphony Orchestra on June 26 for invitees only.

Rita is a lyrical soprano, educated at Barrat Due Musikkinstitutt and at Oslo National Academy of the Arts (former Norwegian State Opera institute/ SOHS). Beside her studies, she has played in musicals and musical comedies in Oslo and Stockholm. After ending her studies, she has worked for the Norwegian National Opera during seven years as a soloist. Rita also has great experience from singing with diverse choirs and she has sung with most of the Norwegian symphony orchestras.
Nils Harald Sødal received his education from The Norwegian Academy of Music and from the University of Oslo. He has had several grand roles at the Norwegian National Opera, among those Camille de Rossilon in The Merry Widow (Franz Lehár), Pilatus in Barrabas (Hvoslef), Alfredo in La Traviata (Verdi), Alfred in The Bat (J. Strauss), Apollo in Orfeo (Monteverdi) and Don José in Carmen (Bizet). He is internationally acclaimed (Opernwelt / Germany, Opera/ Sweden) for his interpretation of the title role in Alfred Herring. He has worked a lot within the contemporary opera genre and has been granted a scholarship from the Norwegian state to work with new music.

Anna was educated at the The Academy of Music in Malmö and at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She got her debut at the Norwegian National Opera with the role of Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos. Later, she has performed as Carmen in Carmen, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Prins Orlovsky in the Bat, Clotilde in Norma, Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Flosshilde in das Rheingold, Rossweise in die Valküre, Anitra in Peer Gynt og Azucena in Verdis Trubaduren.
She has also performed as Olga in Eugen Onegin, Nancy in Albert Herring, Endymione in Calisto, Audne in Stallo by Ole Olsen and Santuzza by Mascagni.
James Duddle was born in Norwich, England in 1980. As a boy he sang in the Norwich Cathedral Choir and received Piano and Organ tuition. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music, London, with Professors John Barstow (Piano) and Margaret Phillips (Organ). For his Postgraduate studies at the RCM he took the Orchestral Conducting Diploma with Professor Neil Thomson, receiving a Distinction for his final exam.

James is currently working as a freelance conductor and pianist based in Oslo. Opera engagements during the spring include Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea”at the Norwegian Opera and Mozart opera highlights with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.
This is the fifth group of Musicians touring Sri Lanka as part of a broader music cooperation established between Concerts Norway and Sewalanka Foundation. Norwegian Bands such as Ras Nas, The Indian Core, Nils-Olav Johansen Quartet and SISU who toured Sri Lanka previously as well as the Gall Music Festival, came alive as part of this programme.

 

Work started on Hiruta Pipena Sooriyakantha

Popular tele-drama director Sanjaya Gunawardana started work on his latest tele-drama ‘Hiruta Pipena Sooriyakantha’. The muhurath ceremony was held at the Punchi Theatre in Colombo recently.
This tele-drama is produced by Sampath Palitha de Saram featuring a popular and talented cast. Among the stars are Udayanthi Kulatunga, Dananjaya Siriwardena, Cyril Dharmawardena, Kusum Renu, Miyuru Samarasinghe, Rohana Beddage and Susila Kottege. Popular Jounalists Ramesh Uvais, Shan Bandu Weerasinghe and Tenyson are also amongst the cast.

Sanjaya, who started his career as a journalist has come a long way as a tele-drama director with popular hits like ‘Labai Apple’, ‘Gajamuthu’, ‘Wasanthaya Aran Avith’ and ‘Amaya’.
Navaratne Gamage will compose the music for this fascinating love story which will run over 100 episodes, while the theme song will be sung by Uresha Ravihari.
Producer Sampath Palitha de Saram hails from a well-known business family in Kiribathgoda. He is a popular private tutor in Economics and Social Studies.

 

Shakthi Grand Master - Season 5

The quest for knowledge continues...

Grand Master, the popular quiz programme on Shakthi TV, hosted by Dr G. S. Pradeep was moved into its 5th season on June 5.
Grand Master has been a ratings and revenue driver for Shakthi TV since it was launched in December 2007.
People from all walks of life including many celebrities have taken part in this programme. The programme, subtitled in Sinhala, also boasts a cross section of audience as the content and the nature of programme are appealing to all communities.
Season 5 of Grand Master in a new format that is adorning the weekend prime time on Shakthi TV (Saturdays and Sundays at 08.30pm).

Raavan at Liberty Cinema on June 18

Dev falls in love with Ragini, a spunky classical dancer who is as unconventional as him. They get married and he takes up his new post in Lal Maati, a small town in northern India, a town where the word of law is not the police but Beera, who is a tribal who has, over the years, shifted the power equation of the place from the ruling to the have-nots of the area.
Dev knows that the key to bringing order to any place is to vanquish the big fish; in this case – Beera. In one stroke Dev manages to rip open Beera’s word, and set in motion a chain of events which will claim lives, change fortunes.
Beera injured but engaged hits back starting a battle that draws Dev, Beera and Ragini into the jungle, the jungle which is dense, confusing and scary. In this journey they must confront their own truth. This is a journey which will test their beliefs, convictions and emotions, the emotions which are as scary and confusing as the forest. The forest becomes the battleground, the battle between good and evil, between Dev and Beera, between Ram and Raavan. But when the lines dividing good and evil are blurring fast whose side will you take. When hate turns to love and the good starts looking evil which side will you battle for? Love is a battle that nobody wins but everyone must fight, Even this Raavan.

Suriya is now a dad of two kids!!

Jo delivered a baby boy on Monday (June 7) at 4:03 morning. After Diya, their Daughter, the couple has a son. The dedicated dad is on seventh heaven.
The couple has done many films together that have set them high on screens as adorable couple. Indeed, they have been proving that they are real life adorable couples with their meaningful life. Now, that they are endowed with a beautiful baby boy, the entire family is happy with it.
