Council of Management 2010-2011

The 106th Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on June 20 amidst a large gathering of Old Boys, at the college hall, preceded by Holy Mass which was celebrated by Old Ben Priest Rev Fr. Lasantha De Abrew, followed by a social lunch at the Old Bens Sports Club.

Konkarahena village receives donations

MP for Hambantota District and Chairman of the Janasuwaya Development Project, Sajith Premadasa donating a water pump worth Rs. 200,000 to the village Konkarahena of Katuwana Division of Hambantota Distirct in order to provide pure drinking water to the community


Digeka Avith

Namel Weeramuni’s latest productions, Digeka Avith−a one act comedy and an adaptation from Anton Chekhov’s play, The Proposal, which was an approved text in schools for the last so many years, and Kandoskiriyawa, an election booth satire by Somapala Gunadheera go on the boards in Gampaha.

Live South African Jazz music

To make your South African dream comes true, the South African jazz band Alexandra Amakoho Project exclusively flown to Sri Lanka to perform at Hilton Colombo.
The band will play typical South African afro-jazz and the most popular Kwaito music until the end of the 2010 Soccer World Cup Tournament. The jazz deserves your ear, its incredibly diverse, articulate, and glowingly expressive.

What does Nelson Mandela do after becoming president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives oppressors who jailed him for 27 years for his fight against apartheid and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field. Clint Eastwood (named 2009’s Best Director by the National Board of Review) directs and uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. Morgan Freeman (NBR’s Best Actor Award winner and Oscar nominee for this role) is Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Matt Damon) and his squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup. Prepare to be moved and thrilled. Screening will conclude with a discussion panel on post conflict reconciliation.

The most anticipated movie, Raavan which was made simultaneously in Hindi (Raavan), Tamil (Raavanan) and Telugu (Villan), produced and directed by Mani Ratnam is now showing in Sri Lanka.
Abishek Bachchan played the lead role in Hindi version while Vikram played the lead role in the Tamil version.
Aishwarya Rai played the female lead role in both the version.
The film’s music is composed by the Oscar winner A. R. Rahman.

Celebrating 50 years

The Golden Jubilee celebration and Prize Giving ceremony of the Madharasathul Malharis Sulhiyya (Islamic Religious School) Maligawatte, Colombo was held at its auditorium recently.


National Youth Flag Week

National Youth Flag Week was commemorated by Embilipitiya Youth Council Advisory Board and the trainees there. The first Youth Flag was pinned to Sonny Rohana Kodituwakku, Ratnapura District MP at the commemoration ceremony


New state-of-the-art District Hospital for Potuvil

A new three-storey Potuvil District Hospital building initiated by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and constructed with funding support of over 100 million rupees from the Finland Red Cross was handed over to the health authorities recently.
The state-of-the-art building consists of wards, X-ray room, out-door patient’s division, laboratory, ECG room, incentive care unit, operation theatre, recovery room, pharmacy, radiographic room, administrative unit and rest rooms for doctors and nurses.

Karate Kid

Now screening
Starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the Box Office hit martial arts remake of the 1984 film “The Karate Kid”. The movie is directed by Harald Zwart, produced by Jaden Smith parents Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The story of The Karate Kid is, a 12-year-old boy from Detroit who moves to China with his mother and incurs the wrath of the neighbourhood bully. He makes an unlikely ally in the form of his ageing maintenance man, Han, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets of self-defence.
