Constituent Assembly to draw up new constitution - Vasu

Vasudeva Nanayakkara, one time leftist firebrand and close friend of President Rajapaksa, says there will not be any piecemeal Constitutional changes, but a whole new Constitution will be put together by a Constituent Assembly as was done in 1972 and 1978 after the current preliminary discussions with various parties. The appointment of the Constituent Assembly would come about anytime after the swearing in of the President for his second term in November. Following are excerpts from the interview.

Sajith Premadasa

“DARLING OF THE GRASSROOTS”

Chief contender for the UNP leadership Sajith Premadasa, though, at times, seen as being outmanoeuvred by its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at every turn, the rebellion against the leader is now firmly behind Sajith. In the past, when troubles were mounting, the leader would take off on long foreign sojourns, as of now, with visits to India and Europe, to contemplate and plan countermoves using proxies, but the present rebellion, unlike half baked abortive ones of the past, seems almost insurmountable.
