Long-serving prisoners to serve in open camps

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry has taken action to deploy long-term servers in prisons in the country in livestock and agricultural development activity.
“We hope to transfer the long-term servers in Welikada, Mahara and Bogambara prisons to a new open-air prison camp to be set up in Wellawaya. They will later serve as the workforce at the livestock and agricultural farms to be opened up in the area,” Minister Dew Gunasekera said.
“Food items like rice, vegetables and eggs produced at these farms will be supplied to other prisons as well to meet their raw provision needs. This will lead to a sizable reduction in monies spent on provisions supplied to prisons,” the minister pointed out.
He said that prisoners are being deployed in cultivation work in Polonnaruwa under a pilot project and this exercise has already proved a great success.
