Hikka ‘Scintillate 2010’ kicks off

By Ananda Seneviratne, our Hikkaduwa Corr.

The grand annual “Hikka” beach carnival at Hikkaduwa was kicked off on Friday night under the theme ‘Scintillate 2010’ at Hotel Amaya. It concludes tonight.
The event organiser, Ifham Ariss said that the festival consisted of a variety of events like traditional music, western music, cultural shows, beauty pageants, dancing and many more to entertain both foreign and local tourists.
Sri Gunawardana, the previous event organiser and the president of the Hikkaduwa Hoteliers Association, said that this time the event was their personal effort and there was no involvement by the Tourist Board due to the adverse publicity given to last year’s Carnival “Hikka 2009”.
In light of the event all hotels were fully booked this weekend. Amaya alone is hosting 750 locals and 500 foreigners.
The main pageant organised by the Hoteliers Association with the help of Tourists Providers Association, Hikkaduwa Urban Council and the Ruhunu Tourism Organisation comprised three elephants and 24 dance items. To entertain the villagers and attract the youth in the area a musical show has also been specially organised at the beach near Mamas Hotel.
Though there is no involvement by the Tourists Board in this year’s carnival, it is expected to be no less vibrant as in past years.
In view of the massive crowd expected Hikkaduwa Police has been strengthened with additional personnel from other divisions.
