Massacre of Kandy’s giant trees

By Malika Etulgama
Kandy Municipal Councilors sought an answer this week from the Acting Mayor Suminda Wickramasinghe as to who is responsible for cutting down huge ‘Mara’ trees around Kandy.
The question was first raised at the monthly meeting on Thursday by Councilor Anura Gonawela. These giant trees had given shade to the people for years and he queried as to who had given permission to cut them down. He called upon the acting Mayor to investigate and put a stop to this massacre of trees. He said that if the branches are chopped off then it is another matter, but to fell the trees was a national crime.
Councilor M.P.Jayasinghe said that he stopped his vehicle on seeing a tree being cut and when he inquired from the workers on whose orders they were dong so, their reply astonished him when they said that they were from the Timber Corporation. Who are they to cut trees within the Kandy Municipality without the permission of the Council? he queried from the Mayor.
Acting Mayor Wickramasinghe gave an undertaking to investigate the whole matter.
