When cops became robbers

By Neminda Samarajeeva and Dyan Pathiravithana

The recent attempted robbery of a trishaw near Walahanduwa, Galle by some rogue policemen was foiled due to vigilance of a Police patrol of the Akmeemana police. The trishaw belonging to an insurance company worker had been tipped off as an easy prey for stealing by a Police Constable (PC) working in the Akmeemana station to another working at Ambalangoda Police. The insurance worker had been a frequent visitor to the Akmeemana station.
The PC from Ambalangoda and two others had travelled in a Dolphin van bearing license plate 54/1139 for the robbery on Wednesday (25). They had stopped the trishaw driven by the owner at 9 p.m. The PC had threatened the man that the vehicle was a stolen one when the owner could not produce documents related to the vehicle. Showing him the Police ID, he had said they were there to take the vehicle to Ambalangoda.
At this point around 9.30 p.m. a police patrol from the Akmeemana police arrived on the scene. Two of the men ran off leaving the PC from Ambalangoda behind. The police party gave chase and arrested the two along with the constable. Meanwhile, the driver got away in the van. The police is on the lookout for the Van having obtained details from the RMV.
