Minister visits Horana Industrial Estate

Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Minister Douglas Devananda recently paid a surprise observation visit to the Horana Industrial Estate.
This industrial estate, one of the largest in the island, houses 17 major export-oriented manufacturing companies.
The Industrial Development Board, which maintains this estate, charges an annual land rental ranging from Rs 66,000 to Rs 90,000 per 40-perch block of land.
The Minister observed the industrial operations at some major companies. They include MDK Food Products (Pvt) Limited, which produces food items and beverages, is the largest in the industrial estate. It has a workforce of about 400 people. ‘Lakpa’ Footwear (Pvt) Limited, producing footwear, employs about 120 workers and Elastometric Engineering Company Limited producing rubber goods..
The Minister also held talks with the employees of MDK and ‘Lakpa’ Organisations.
They informed the Minister that they were being well looked after by their employers.
The head of ‘Lakpa’ organisation, Chandra Kannangara, intimated to the Minister that the company was ready to set up a similar factory in Jaffna, provided the facilities deemed necessary were supplied to them.
The Minister was given to understand that the Elastometric Engineering Company exports its products to 20 countries and has a workforce of about 650.
The heads of all the manufacturing organisations in the estate complained to the Minister that their industries were severely affected because of frequent power failures and sought his help to sort this issue.
They said they could join hands with the government in meeting its development challenges, provided they were adequately supported.
