Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Minister
Douglas Devananda recently paid a surprise
observation visit to the Horana Industrial Estate.

island, houses 17 major export-oriented
The Industrial Development Board, which maintains
this estate, charges an annual land rental ranging
from Rs 66,000 to Rs 90,000 per 40-perch block of
The Minister observed the industrial operations at
some major companies. They include MDK Food Products
(Pvt) Limited, which produces food items and
beverages, is the largest in the industrial estate.
It has a workforce of about 400 people. ‘Lakpa’
Footwear (Pvt) Limited, producing footwear, employs
about 120 workers and Elastometric Engineering
Company Limited producing rubber goods..
The Minister also held talks with the employees of
MDK and ‘Lakpa’ Organisations.
They informed the Minister that they were being well
looked after by their employers.
The head of ‘Lakpa’ organisation, Chandra
Kannangara, intimated to the Minister that the
company was ready to set up a similar factory in
Jaffna, provided the facilities deemed necessary
were supplied to them.
