Lokuge cries foul over
labour double standards of West
Low-profile Labour Minister Gamini Lokuge, who is no
stranger to labour issues having at one time led the union
arm of the United National Party, answers some serious
allegations made against Sri Lanka this week by the
International Trade Union Confederation before the World
Trade Organisation in Geneva. He particularly castigates
western countries for having double standards on this issue.
Citing how in some countries government sponsored death
squads have been abducting and systematically eliminating
dozens of trade union leaders, he says the US and the EU are
generally silent on those happenings while making a lot of
noise about little things here and even penalising us.
