Lokuge cries foul over labour double standards of West

Low-profile Labour Minister Gamini Lokuge, who is no stranger to labour issues having at one time led the union arm of the United National Party, answers some serious allegations made against Sri Lanka this week by the International Trade Union Confederation before the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. He particularly castigates western countries for having double standards on this issue. Citing how in some countries government sponsored death squads have been abducting and systematically eliminating dozens of trade union leaders, he says the US and the EU are generally silent on those happenings while making a lot of noise about little things here and even penalising us. New budget ‘will protect interests of public servants’

With the unveiling of the government’s annual budget being round the corner, there is widespread speculation about the possible budget proposals not only in political circles and business circles but also among the general public.
