‘Cabinet gazette’ draft faces delays

By Gagani Weerakoon
The much-hyped gazette notification demarcating subject areas and institutions for each Cabinet portfolio, which was to be issued by Thursday (25), will now take few more days due to government failing to finalise the allocations.

Sources at the Government Printing Department said that even by Friday, they could not finalise drafting the gazette as new appointments had been made and they were yet to receive subject matters of each portfolio.
On Thursday, when The Nation contacted the department they explained that technical problems had delayed the process and when asked on Friday said that they were facing practical difficulties in finalising it since the government was yet to send confirmed information.

“We are doubtful whether the gazette will be ready even by next Friday,” a department source said.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that most of the senior ministers as well as several other ministers are not happy about the portfolios they have received and apart from those who got the same portfolio as earlier others are in confusion as to what their subject area is.

There are 61 cabinet ministers including the senior ministers and 34 deputy ministers at present.
