PUNCHI BANDA ON WARPATH
One of the stern warnings given by President
Rajapaksa to each of his new Ministers is not to
criticise the previous holder of the post, but to do
the job entrusted to each one to the best of his/her
ability, but this rule apparently does not apply to
Treasury boss Dr P B Jayasundera. So what have we?
Punchi Banda has a field day attacking BoI wherever
he goes. Did someone there rub him on the wrong
side? Little bird whispers that this obsession is
coming from the time a casino businessman held the
job there. That man aiming for the stars is said to
have boasted that he would next have the ST’s job,
which irked PB to no end.
Poor peacock having put planes before pilots it
found the embarrassing way that it has no flyers to
go to two new destinations – Guangzhou and Moscow,
which earlier it proudly announced for November and
December. No one knows when these expanded routes
will come to fruition finally even though the
aviation industry is booming everywhere. But it is
not all bad news for the Lankan flying industry, for
the budget carrier Mihin the business is truly
booming. Next week we will see it touching three new
destinations – Dacca, Jakarta and Male with a
slightly bigger second aircraft, an Airbus A321.
Though Peacock with its nose in the air may treat it
like a poor relative, because it has the pretence of
serving a higher category of passengers, Mihin not
bothered by such treatment however has the winning
formula for a budget carrier with no frills; meaning
it has only one class, uses budget terminals,
standard meals, no expensive lounges… etc.
For a long time our confectionery industry was in
the hands of one or two big players who enjoyed more
or less a captive local market, but when competition
arrived, a once unbeatable giant got easily knocked
off its pedestal. But now even others must pull up
their socks, for imported products are making waves.
Some say that Britannia could be ruling the waves
soon, but this Britannia is from across the Palk
