Building boon for school

The Wellawatte Jaycees recently presented a fully-furnished building costing over two million rupees to Arafath Muslim Maha Vidyalaya at Egodauyana in Modera, Moratuwa.
The school was damaged during the tsunami.
The event coincided with 35th anniversary of establishing Sister Chapter Relationship with the Kitakyushu Jaycees of Japan who funded the entire project.
The Sister Chapter Relationship between the Wellawatte Jaycees and the Kitakyushu Jaycees were signed way back in November 1975 when a six-member delegation led by then president Ryutaro Fukamachi established the relationship at Hotel Ceylon Continental under the presidency of JCI Senator Isfahani Sameen.

In his address to those present, he said he was indeed delighted to be given the honour and added that the Wellawatte Jaycees had done yeoman service to uplift the standards of the facilities available to the students at Arafath Muslim Maha Vidyalaya.
Over the years, the Kitakyushu Jaycees and Wellawatte Jaycees have carried out many projects.
To mark the 35th Anniversary, the Wellawatte Jaycees is offering Membership to 35 youths between the ages of 18 and 40 at its annual general meeting to be held on January 8 at the Colombo Hilton Hotel.

Donation speaks volumes

A collection of books was donated to the library of Denagama Maha Vidyalaya in Hakmana recently, under the Library Books Distribution Project of the Samadhi Gnana Pradeepa Programme. TILVIN IN SOUTH KOREA

JVP general secretary Tilvin Silva visited South Korea to attend the Il Maha Viru Samaru Ulela ( Commemoration of November Heroes) held by the JVP committee of South Korea. During his visit, the JVP general secretary held talks with a delegation from the Democratic Labour Party of South Korea with a view to strengthening the political ties between two parties, the JVP Media Unit said

 

VAFA Annual Student Show
The annual student exhibition of Vibavi Lalitha Kala Academy was held recently at the Lionel Wendt Gallery, Colombo 7. This was organised as an incentive to those who engage in this field and to appreciate their labour.
Selected drawings, paintings, sculptures and ceramic items were displaced at this exhibition. Majority of the exhibits were from the first year students while a healthy number of senior students were also took part in this event.

Sri Lankan Chevening Scholar meets the Duke Of York at LSE
Seshika Fernando, a Chevening scholar from Sri Lanka, currently studying at the London School of Economics (LSE) was recently invited to a round table discussion with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. The discussion was attended by about 20 Chevening scholars from LSE and a “very different experience,” as Seshika puts it.
She added, “LSE is a very busy and interesting place. We have so many events featuring finance professionals and talks by the industry which is great to build a solid network of leading finance professionals. LSE also attracts some really famous people like prime ministers, policy makers and researchers of different countries, to deliver talks on economy, foreign policy, environmental issues etc. on nearly a daily basis, and I try to religiously attend these whenever time permits.”
Chevening is the UK Government’s scholarship programme for overseas students. The British government covers the costs of study in the UK of post-graduate students with the potential to become future leaders in their home countries. Currently, there are two Sri Lankans Chevening scholars studying in the UK.

People’s Bank all night Pirith Ceremony

Arrangements have been made by the People’s Bank Western Zone II Office, moving into newly built three storied building at a cost of Rs. 90.0 mn. on January 10, at auspicious time at No. 117/A, Highlevel Road, Nugegoda for Colombo Outer RHO and Nugegoda City Branch.
On account of this occasion, an all night Pirith Ceremony will be held on January 2 to confer blessings to the country, people, customers and People’s Bank staff and followed by an almsgiving to over 50 of most venerable Maha Sangha.

Felicitation ceremony

Muslim Education Progressive Society (MEPS) organised a felicitation ceremony to the 15 Muslim students who obtained 15 A passes in the GCE Ordinary Level Examination year 2009 was held recently at the Muslim Ladies’ Study Circle Auditorium, Colombo. Chancellor of the South Eastern University Prof A M Ishak was the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner of Examination A S Mohamed was the guest of honour and Senior Announcer of the SLBC A R M Jiffry was the guest speaker. It was held under the patronage of MEPS President M Z Ahamed Munawwar.

 

Devil

The first of The Night Chronicles trilogy, Devil, the latest supernatural thriller is based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan.
The movie is about a group of people trapped inside an elevator, who realise one of them is the Devil. Devil is directed by John Erick Dowdle, written by Brian Nelson.

Donation from Arogya Foundation

The appeal made by Arogya Foundation, a charitable organisation at Nalandaramaya, Pathiragoda, Maharagama, was responded to by a Sri Lankan in Norway, Chris Jacob who donated Rs.107,800/- to the amputee who lost her left leg after an operation. The donation was handed over to Shamali Dimuthu Yapa, of Galagedara, Poholiadda, Hanepola in Kandy, by Wimala Somaratne, President, National Council of Buddhist Women, at Torrington Mawatha, Colombo 7. The occasion was graced by the presence of Chief incumbent of Asokaramaya, Thimbirigasyaya, President Prof Ariyapala Perera, Gamini Dahanayake, P A Gunawardana, Bhathiya Satharasinghe along with the members of both organisations participated.

 

Public signature collection

Chairperson of Shramashakthi organisation and Central Provincial Councilor Shanthini Kongahage launched a public signature collection campaign, at Bandaranayake Mawatha, in Colombo recently to request for clemency from the King of Saudi Arabia to save Rizena Nazeek from death sentence.
