Key Southern official dies of head injuries

M W Wijethileke, Secretary to several ministries of the Southern Province Chief Minister died on Thursday (27) at the ICU of the Karapitiya Hospital of head injuries after being knocked down by a trishaw while walking for his morning exercise.
He was hit by a speeding trishaw on Monday (24) early morning as he had completed a run with a friend and was walking along the side of the road at Hapugala to wind down.
The driver of the trishaw was taken into custody by the Galle Police and produced before Additional Magistrate S Kodagoda, who remanded him till February 12.
The 48-year-old secretary was the father of two and served in the capacity of the chief secretary of the Southern Provincial Council from 2004 to March 2009.
He later served as the Secretary to the Chief Ministerís Ministries of Health, Education, Finance, Law and Reconstruction.
His funeral took place at the St Ritaís family burial grounds, Hapugala.
