Victim of prison officers’ shooting dies
By Dinidu Karunanayake and Sunil Weerasooriya

Lasantha Pradeep Dissanayake, the 32 year-old victim of last Wednesday’s shooting outside the Mt Lavinia Magistrate court, succumbed to his injuries early morning yesterday at the Kalubowila Hospital.
According to the hospital sources, he had been shot between heart and abdomen, and died at the ICU after a surgery.
Dissanayake, a temporary resident of Templer’s Road, Mt Lavinia, became the hapless victim to pass by when two prison officers opened fire at a remand suspect fleeing from their custody on January 26.
A ‘notorious runaway’, Sarath Chandana Silva alias Chooty Putha, was to be produced before the Mt Lavinia magistrate in connection with several robberies.
A woman lawyer narrowly escaped being hit when one of the bullets ricocheted off her car’s dashboard and steering wheel.
The tragic incident was caused by ‘a misfiring’ as seen in the preliminary observations, said Major-General V R Silva the Prison Commissioner.General.
