17 illegal migrants to Australia caught near H’tota

By Neminda Samarajeeva
A Navy patrol had intercepted a deep-sea trawler, carrying 17 would be illegal Lankan migrants to Australia near Hambantota last Sunday.
The group comprising nine Tamils, six Sinhalese and two Muslims were handed over to the Galle Harbour Police on Monday evening (21).
Inspector Meshan de Silva told The Nation that all 17 were being held for questioning under detention orders issued by the Ministry of Defence. After questioning, they will be produced before a Magistrate.
It has been revealed that the 17 taken into custody are from Jaffna, Trincomalee, Puttalam and Chilaw. They had boarded the vessel fitted with 75 horse power engines in Trincomalee on February 14 in the guise of fishermen and six were carrying permits intended for such work. (DP)
