Life size cut-out of President destroyed

By Wilson Gnanadas
A life size cut-out of President Mahinda Rajapaksa was burned down completely in the wee hours at Ambalantota yesterday (12).
The cut out was erected by Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha UPFA candidate Munasir Casim.
According to police the cut out has been set on fire at around 2.30 am.
The huge cut out has been set up at the entrance to the Bolana colony in Ambalantota. The Bolana colony, a predominantly Muslim settlement, was established by Justice M. T. Akbar during the British period.

Ambalantota OIC Tissa Wijeratne said as a picture of the UPFA candidate Munasir Casim was also seen along with President Rajapaksa in the huge cut out side by side, it was not certain whether those who had vandalised the cut out had in fact done this to vent their anger against the candidate.

“We are not too sure about it. We are trying to find out whether this was done due to anger against the President or the candidate. So far nobody has been taken in for questioning,” he said.
Meanwhile when UPFA parliamentarian A. L. M. Azwer addressed a gathering at the Bolana colony last evening, he said that this incident was a sure indication of ‘desperation’ and ‘defeat’, by opposition parties.
However fingers have been pointed at the JVP for this incident.
