Bar Council call to reinstate Judge de Abrew

The monthly meeting of the Bar Council yesterday took up the view that Appeal Court Judge Sarath de Abrew should be reinstated to resume duties on the Bench as he had been exonerated by independent probes by the Child Protection Authority, the CID and the Attorney Generalís Department.
Secretary of the Colombo Law Society, Lakshman Amerasinghe told The Nation that the matter was raised by S. Thangarajah and Y. S. de Silva of the Kalutara Bar made representations in support of it.
Justice de Abrew was removed from the bench last September following certain newspaper articles about alleged sexual abuse of a domestic aid, but investigations had revealed that they were trumped up charges.
According to Amerasinghe, yesterdayís monthly meeting was attended by about 175 delegates from Bar Association branches countrywide.
They were also to take up the UN Secretary Generalís controversial advisory panel report, but it was put off for May 7 as the required seven days notice had not been given, said Amerasinghe.
